Double Glazing

Double glazed windows are a smart investment for Canberra homes, delivering year-round comfort by helping to keep your home at a more consistent temperature. Stay warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and enjoy lower energy bills every season.

Double glazed windows are highly efficient, reducing your heat loss or gain by up to 30% compared to single-pane windows. Double glazing is two pieces of glass which are separated by an air gap which is sealed and acts as a break between the inside and outside pieces of glass. The air gap is filled with argon gas which increases the insulation between the glass pieces.

Up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost and up to 87% of its heat gained through windows, so improving the thermal performance will increase your home’s comfort and reduce energy consumption, therefore lowering costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The thermal performance of a window depends on how well the glass and frame conduct heat (U value) and how well the glass and frame transmit heat from direct sunlight.

Benefits of Double Glazing

Increases thermal efficiency and reduces your heat loss or gain by up to 30% when compared to single-glazed windows.

Significantly reduces heating and cooling energy costs, lowering your carbon footprint

Reduces outdoor noise and improves security of home with toughened safety glass

Increases the value of your home

Less condensation on your windows, which in also prevents mould formation

Protects against UV radiation and direct sunlight to prevent fading of your furnishings

HOW IT WORKS

Optimised for Canberra's Climate

The ACT falls within “climate zone” 7 and 8 (as per the Australian Building Codes Board) , which are considered heating climates, requiring windows with a low U-value which denotes better insulation, and high Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient (SHGC) to capture free heat from the sun.
High Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
Capture free heat from the sun

LowE glass is most suitable for colder climates with maximum visible light, passive heat gain and excellent insulation. Low E glass has a transparent low emissivity coating that reflects heat while still allowing in maximum light, helping keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. By blocking the sun’s harmful UV rays, laminated Low E glass also reduces fading on furniture, carpet and curtains.

Retrofit vs Replacement Windows

At Just Rite, we assess your current windows to determine whether to retrofit double glazing into existing frames or replace windows altogether.

We will assess the condition of your current windows to determine whether we could retrofit double glazing into your existing aluminium or timber windows or if it’s best to replace your windows altogether. The replacement could be either an aluminium, UPVC or thermally broken window, we will discuss the benefits of each to help you make an informed decision based on your home and budget.

Achieving energy efficiency doesn’t always mean replacing every window or door in your home. Depending on your home’s layout and building materials, you may be able to make improvements without overspending. When upgrading, it’s best to prioritise areas that demand the most heating and cooling, such as kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, and other frequently used spaces. Targeting these high-impact areas will maximise your comfort and your home’s overall energy rating.
